Our First Summer Jobs

Can you remember your first summer job? Some of us here at 1240 CJCS can. Enjoy!
I worked in the Camera Department at the K-Mart store in Rexdale. The Polaroid cameras were the craze at the time and I had tons of fun demonstrating them by taking pictures of anyone who came near the camera dept!
I was 16 and got a job as a dishwasher at Jay's Bar & Grill here in Stratford. I think I made $6.40/hour and only worked Sunday nights. I was only there for about 9 months or so.
My first summer job was picking apples at an orchard near Wildwood.
But I didn’t pick apples off the tree, I picked them up off the ground.
I think I made a certain amount for each basket I collected.
Plenty of fresh air, sun and apple cider.
When I was 13, I pumped gas, at a Gas Station/Restaurant in Bornholm called Route 23. I made 1 penny per litre of gas I pumped. I always loved when transport truck pulled in!! (I guess I was always destined to work in a commission environment). I remember one slow summer day I worked 12 hours and made $20. Looking back on it I’m pretty sure that’s illegal but I was young and my parents told me I should just be happy to have a job!!!
My first summer job was working at a Tim Hortons attached to a hotel as kind of a server/mopper/cleaner/heavy lifter kid. Sometimes they’d have me work the overnight shift wherein I served truckers and drunk party guests at the hotel next door. They tipped great!! The pay was pretty good! I made about $300 a paycheque which was like being a millionaire at the time.

My first summer job was scooping ice cream at Gardiner's Dairy just off the Square in Goderich. I was 15. I loved working there because the customers were always happy - who wouldn't be when you're eating ice cream? All my friends would hang out on the picnic table there too so I never felt like I was really working.Every payday I would buy my mom a carnation and take it home for her. Yes, those shorts are 80's era velour! |
I worked in my Dad's convenience store when I was 13 in Cooksville (Mississauga). It was called Ernie's Variety. Long hours, hot, but I got paid! I remember a small pack of cigarettes was about 20 cents. And I had all the chocolate bars I could eat!
I got my first summer job when I was 15 years old with the Stratford Agricultural Society. I made $7.10 an hour. My primary task was the Nevada Ticket booth in the Bingo Country. The best part of the job was the tips. Bingo players can be quite a generous bunch. If I gave them one of the bigger winning tickets they would often give me fifty or one hundred bucks from the prize. A big shout out to Velma for giving the biggest tips! The worst part of the job; it was before Ontario was smoke free! The second hand smoke still reminds of the tear gas chamber at boot camp.
