Missing Swimmer - Thu. July 24 05:50 am
Rescue crews searched late Wednesday night for a 17-year-old Stratford male who went missing while swimming in Lake Huron. Provincial police were called around 5 p.m. to a beach in Grand Bend after the youth disappeared. The search included the length of the beach, with police and emergency workers looking for the youth. The U.S. Coast Guard also dispatched a helicopter to help look. Police planned to search the beach overnight and were expecting a helicopter and divers to arrive this morning to continue the search.

Raceway Fines - Thu. July 24 07:41 am
Fines against three racetracks in the province have been reduced by the Ontario Racing Commission. The fines against horse racing and gaming venues in Woodstock, Windsor and Dresden were levied in July 2007. The commission was dissatisfied with a business plan filed by the owners of the three tracks and levied a fine of 75-thousand. The commission has now lowered the fines to three-thousand dollars per track after each submitted acceptable plans.

 

Missing Girls - Thu. July 24 06:16 am
Huron O.P.P. continue their search for two missing teenage girls. The two left a Huron Park foster home July 10th. Police say since then there have been several sightings of 14-year old Kristy Baillie and 13-year old Vangi Dojosefska in Port Burwell and Tillsonburg. The two girls are both about five feet tall, with thin builds. Kristy has green eyes, while Vangi has brown. They both have long hair, but are known to change hair colour frequently. Anyone seeing the girls is asked to contact Ontario Provincial Police.

O.P.P. Cruiser Hit - Thu. July 24 06:12 am
Oxford O-P-P are looking for witnesses after an officer and two others were injured on the 401 yesterday. They'd like to talk with anyone who saw a driver slam into a police cruiser near Culloden Road. An O-P-P sergeant was sitting in the cruiser after attending to a car that had gone into the ditch when a van slammed into the back of it during a rain storm. The three drivers were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Gas Prices Dip - Thu. July 24 06:09 am
Motorists across Stratford, Perth county and the rest of Canada are getting a pleasant surprise this morning at the pumps. The price of gasoline is down in many centres in the country - about a penny in this area - but as much as 10 cents a litre in New Brunswick. The drop comes on the heels of yesterday's four-dollar plunge in oil prices.

Kitchener Father-Son Murder Case - Thu. July 24 06:08 am
A 44-year old Kitchener man accused of using his teenaged children to try to kill his estranged wife has been committed to stand trial. The decision followed evidence from just four witnesses at a preliminary hearing on charges of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Evidence at the two-day hearing can't be published because of a court order. Also charged are the man's two sons who were 14 and 16-years old at the time of an alleged plot to drown their mother in the bathtub at the family home.

Guelph Mother Arson - Thu. July 24 06:07 am
A Guelph woman accused of burning down her home with her teenage son inside is free on bail. Forty-two-year old Janet Philp was released under strict conditions Wednesday. She is charged with attempted murder and arson with disregard for human life in a fire at the family home July 15th. A publication ban was imposed on the allegations read inside the courtroom.

Intercounty Baseball - Thu. July 24 05:29 am
A combination of rain and wet fields forced the cancellation of all games on the Intercounty Baseball League schedule last night. The Stratford Nationals - Brantford game has been re-scheduled for Friday night at National Stadium. Tonight the Nationals will host Kitchener in a game re-scheduled from Tuesday.

Grand Valley Girls Softball - Thu. July 24 05:28 am
The Stratford Flames Squirt Erie Drive In girls defeated Cambridge 7-6 Tuesday night. Leading at the plate was Avery Casey with a double and a single, Brooklynn Leis with a double, Abbey Hertel with two singles and Courtney Forbeck, Rachel McDougall and Rebecca Dietrich each singling. Alyssa Elligson and Brooklynn Leis shared pitching duties. Rachel McDougall and Avery Casey were strong defensively. The Flames league record is now 4-9-1.
