News Stories for Fri. July 30, 2010

Bicyclist Hit By Pellet Fired From Car - Fri. July 30 11:12 am
Perth County OPP are looking for the person responsible for an incident last evening in Mitchell. Officers says two young boys riding their bikes on St. Andrew Street at Waterloo Street in the town around 9pm were approached by a silver-coloured car. As the car passed, a male inside the vehicle pointed what appeared to be a pellet gun at them. Three shots were fired. One round hit one of the boys - but didn't break his skin. Police say two other people may also have been shot at by the same person but they didn't report the incidents to police. Anyone who may have been shot at or who can identify this vehicle and its driver is asked to contact the Perth County OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-2220-TIPS.

Second Candidate For Mayor In Stratford - Fri. July 30 05:50 pm
There are now two names in the hat for the Mayor's job in Stratford in this fall's municipal election. Martin Weatherall joins Mayor Dan Mathieson on the ballot for the top elected city job. He's a retired Toronto police officer and former co-director of WEEP. That's a Canadian non-profit organization dedicated to informing the public about the potential environmental effects associated with exposure to electromagnetic and microwave radiation. Weatherall believes the microwave radiation from cordless phones, wireless computer routers and the citywide high-speed wireless network as well as smart meters being installed in Stratford homes all pose a health risk due to microwave radiation. He says the health and safety of Stratford residents is the single most important issue that needs to be addressed. He says he's also concerned with property tax rates and the level of city debt.

A Listowel resident gave chase this morning when thieves took off with his trailer ... loaded with two ATVs. It happened around 3:30am on Victoria Avenue South. Near Donegal he saw sparks coming from the trailer chains and the trailer separated from the truck and came to a stop. The homeowner lost sight of the truck west of Millbank. He retrieved his trailer and the undamaged four 4 wheelers were undamaged. Perth COunty OPP are still looking for the thieves.

Boys Under 9 Soccer - Fri. July 30 07:50 am
The Stratford B-MO U9 Boys soccer team were slow out of the gate but then played a tremendous game including two well timed headers giving Stratford a convincing 7-2 victory against Waterloo Red on Wednesday. Midfielder, Joshua Zelek playing his best soccer of the year opened the scoring for Stratford on a beautiful corner kick that curled inside the post. Stratford quickly relinquished the lead as Waterloo tied the score shortly thereafter. After a brief sideline coaching discussion the Stratford team came out with one of their strongest team performances. Shawn Barnett added to the midfield played a gritty game in the defensive zone and helped generate the offensive attack. With momentum shifting, Stratford's Ethan Eckstein made an incredible header off a Zelek indirect kick that quickly gave the B-MO boys the lead. Eckstein gave Stratford a two goal cushion on some nice passing from Zelek and Dominic Boon. Boon scored again on a great right footer before the end of the half on a nice feed from Mac Starkebaum who eluded two offensive players and hit Boon on the button with the ball. Caelen Eveleigh scored a beautiful header in the second half redirecting a Zelek corner kick over the leaping goalkeeper and just under the cross bar. Minutes later David Shantz made one of the nicest passes of the evening finding Kolton Debus open down the right side of the field and Debus blasted a right footer from 20 yards giving the visitors from Stratford a 6-1 lead. The big right foot of Maxim Mulder had the Waterloo team backpedaling most of the evening and finally late in the game Mulder found Jacob Wunder alone in the penalty area. Wunder scored a nice left footer rounding out the scoring for Stratford. Brett Maguire who leads the league with five shutouts thwarted many early scoring opportunties.
